Nobody likes wrinkles. Yet all of us will get some eventually, regardless of the amount of time we spend on finding new wrinkle removal methods, or the amount of money we spend on anti wrinkle creams. We know we don’t want them. But do we know exactly what they are?

Wrinkles are fine lines or deep furrows, where the skin has become thinned and damaged. As we age, our skin undergoes changes that make it more difficult for the skin to repair itself, and these changes lead to wrinkles.

Wrinkles are caused by the changes that happen as we age and as our skin is exposed to the sun. The top layer of skin cells (or epidermis) becomes thinner, making the skin look thinner. They also become less sticky, which allows moisture to be released from the skin, causing dryness. The number of cells gets less as we age, which means the skin cannot repair itself as quickly.

The middle layer (or dermal layer) also thins. Less collagen is produced and the skin becomes less elastic. This causes the skin to wrinkle and sag. There is also less sebum produced, causing dry skin.

The area of the skin where the epidermis meets the dermal layer flattens. This makes it easier for the skin to become damaged. It also stops many nutrients getting to the skin cells.

In the bottom layer (or subcultaneous layer), the fat cells get smaller. Fat cells help to fill in the damage from the other layers, so as they get smaller they are not as able to help fill in this damage.
What Causes Premature Wrinkles
Dry skin is one of the top causes of premature wrinkles. People with dry skin will usually get wrinkles before people with normal skin or oily skin. Sun exposure is one of the top causes of premature wrinkles, mostly because the sun’s rays dry out the skin. Smoking also leads to premature wrinkles, again because it dries out the skin. Heredity and fair skin can also be contributing factors. People with fair skin tend to get premature wrinkles more often than other people.
