With the sequential passage of time, most animals will experience normal aging. Of more concern is premature aging, when the changes and disorders commonly associated with growing old come on entirely too soon. Many people become obsessed with measures for anti-aging -- skincare regimens, cosmetic procedures, and supplemental products – without ever fully understanding exactly what is going on with their bodies.

Why Do We Age and What Happens
The effects of aging progress sequentially with the passage of time and collectively lead to a weakening of the body and a loss of acuity of the senses with a rising susceptibility to various diseases. If an individual plans to try to slow down or to stop aging, understanding the aging process is the first step.

The symptoms of human aging include an accumulation of abdominal fat, muscle wasting, a thickening of the skin with deep wrinkles present, poor sleep, cognitive problems like increased short term memory loss, mood changes (particularly increased depression), weakened bones (especially in women suffering from osteoporosis), decreased sexual drive and performance, and impaired heart and kidney function (for instance partial incontinence).

In addition, the hair thins and turns gray. We begin to have less energy and vigor, growing tired more easily. Brown spots on the skin sometimes called “liver spots” begin to appear. Vision and hearing become less acute and we become susceptible to any one of the diseases associated with aging including: Alzheimer’s, stroke, heart attack, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, Parkinson’s, arthritis, cataracts, glaucoma and deafness.
What Causes Natural Aging
In our mid-twenties human being reach the peak of their growth and development. After that we go through a transitional decline into old age marked by both biological and psychological changes. The speed and degree to which an individual will age is a complex and cumulative interplay of genetics, environment, and lifestyle.

There are two dominant theories as to why we age. One is the pre-programmed theory which suggest we all have a biological clock that simply runs down over a lifetime according to a predetermined genetic timetable. Environmental theories believe that the effects of aging are the results of environmental insults to the human system that cause cumulative and progressive damage.
What Causes Premature Aging
Various factors can be responsible for signs of premature aging in the heart, brain, joints, digestive organs, circulatory system, and immune system. Injuries that do not heal thoroughly, allergies, exposure to toxic chemicals or heavy metals, excessive exposure to the sun, the abuse of alcohol or tobacco, poor nutrition, stress, and inactivity can all be contributors. The most common symptom of premature aging is pain from joint instability, inflammation, poor circulation, or pressure within an organ.

There is a rare genetic disorder called Werner’s Syndrome that causes premature aging and conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome make patients feel “old.” Any time you begin to see dramatic changes in your body and in your abilities and stamina you should consult your health care professional. Often a change or improvement in lifestyle will minimize or reverse signs of premature aging. For instance, there is a clear link between over-consumption of alcohol and premature aging. Stopping drinking is an obvious measure to reverse the damage or to at least prevent it from getting worse.
