Cosmetic wrinkle fillers are special products injected below the skin’s surface, filling it up so that it plumps up the skin, smoothing it and reducing wrinkles. Wrinkle fillers used to be made of bovine collagen, which sometimes caused an allergic reaction. New research is being carried out all the time, and some of the newest wrinkle fillers are very safe and very effective. They work with the skin’s natural processes and supplement the products found in your skin. The procedure takes about twenty minutes and is carried out under local anesthetic.
Different Types of Wrinkle Fillers
There are a few different types of wrinkle fillers. Here are some of the most popular ones.
  • Collagen. Collagen occurs naturally in the skin. It provides support and helps shape the skin. Collagen injections used to be done with bovine collagen, but human collagen is now available.
  • Radiesse. Radiesse used to be called Radiance. It is most commonly used for lines near the mouth. The injection softens the folds around the mouth and any lip lines.
  • Restylane. Restylane is a hyaluronic acid product. Restylane injections are inserted into naslabial folds.
  • Botox. Botox is not strictly a wrinkle filler, as it does not fill out the skin, but instead relaxes the facial muscles. This can smooth away wrinkles and prevent further wrinkles from occurring. These injections must be performed by a certified practitioner.
You cannot learn how to inject radiesse, restylane or collagen yourself.
Do They Actually Work?
Wrinkle fillers will cause a significant improvement in the appearance of your skin. The wrinkles on your face will be less noticeable and fine lines may seem to disappear altogether. The effect should be immediate. It may last from two months to two years, depending on the type of injection you get. Collagen lasts for the shortest amount of time (2-3 months). Restylane lasts for 4-6 months. Radiesse can last for as long as three years. However, wrinkle fillers will not cause all your wrinkles to magically vanish. Deep wrinkles and folds of skin should improve in appearance, but will not disappear. Talk to your provider about the effect the injections will have on your skin and ask to see some before and after photographs.
What Is Their Success Rate and Is It Worth Getting Them?
Different practitioners give different figures for their success rate, which can be anywhere from 60% to 100%. What makes it even more difficult to accurately calculate a success rate is that different practitioners will have different ideas of what a successful wrinkle filler operation means. Most wrinkle fillers would aim for about an 80% improvement in wrinkles. Ask your practitioner what his or her success rate is and how they define a successful operation.

A lot of people have gotten wrinkle fillers and have been very happy with the results. There has been nothing to suggest that they do not work at all. Before deciding whether it is worth getting wrinkle fillers, you need to thoroughly research the practitioner, the procedure and the cost. Then, evaluate your own preferences against the criteria.
Associated Dangers
The associated risks and dangers for wrinkle fillers are quite minimal. People may experience temporary discoloration, bruising, redness or itchiness. These symptoms should be completely cleared up within a week. With bovine collagen injections, there is the chance of an allergic reaction. If wrinkle fillers are injected into a blood vessel, there is a danger of a blood clot. Practitioners should not be injecting wrinkle fillers into blood vessels for that reason. No serious side effects are known as yet, but there has not been enough research to guarantee that there are no serious side effects.
