You may have walked through the health food store and heard someone ask, “What is the best antioxidant supplement?” or “What are the best antioxidant foods?” while in your mind you’re still saying, “What are antioxidants?

The direct answer is that antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which of course begs another question. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that assist with many chemical reactions including cell signaling and the intracellular killing of bacteria. Unfortunately free radicals have also been linked to unwanted side effects and to the progressive and cumulative series of changes in the human body called aging.
What Role Do They Play In The Body?
In the body, free radicals are created during oxidation. The body uses some free radicals to destroy foreign growths such as cancer, but under the wrong circumstances, free radicals can also damage healthy cells (including DNA) and may even cause cancer. In fact, free radical activity has been linked to hardening of the arteries, liver dysfunction, emphysema, Parkinson’s, schizophrenia, hearing disorders, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, and diabetes.

When we eat food our body metabolizes the material, a process that includes oxidation and thus causes the production of free radicals. Antioxidants reduce the number of free radicals before they can do damage to healthy cells. Studies in diet have shown that restricting the numbers of calories consumed by lab mice will extend their life span as much as 100%. This seems to clearly link amount of food consumed to life expectancy. It further suggests that the best diet for humans is one of moderate volume but high in antioxidants. Preventing against aging is one of the major benefits of such a diet.
Can Antioxidants Really Reverse Aging?
Regardless of the efficacy of the link between reducing free radical activity and reversing aging, a diet rich in the fruits and vegetables cited as high in antioxidants will be good for you. The modern diet is nothing short of disgraceful with its emphasis on processed and fast foods. We would all benefit from returning to better prepared, more nutritious and natural meals.

Having said that, studies have shown that individuals with high cholesterol will see their numbers improve when they go on an antioxidant diet. In addition, the National Eye Institute conducted a study in 2001 on 3,600 test subjects that showed that high levels of antioxidants (and zinc) reduced the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration by 25%.

Research continues to be conducted on the benefits of antioxidants and the results all speak to potential benefits with no risks. At this point it is safe to say that eating a diet rich in antioxidants won’t hurt you, is good for you on all nutritional levels, and very well may be reducing the harmful activity of free radicals in your body.
